Denmark Western Australia Denmark is a small
town on the banks of the Denmark River with a population of around 5000.
By road it is around 400 km south of Perth and 50 km West of Albany. There
are a number of transportation options to get here.
It is renowned for its natural beauty and is the home of the Tree Top Walk in the Valley of the Giants. The Bibbulmun Track passes within 1 km of the centre of the town at the river mouth. At this point walkers heading East towards Albany must cross over the Wilson Inlet to continue the track on the Nullaki peninsula. Upon reaching the town, visitors soon become aware of the magnificent forest which surrounds the town, and that sweep down to join the sea. The town creates a picture of contrasting images, from the forest, to the river, to the ocean, all equally stunning.
First explored by Dr Thomas Braidwood Wilson of the British Royal Navy in 1829,
the Wilson Inlet was named after him by Governor Stirling and Wilson named
Denmark after a colleague, Dr Alexander Denmark.Denmark became established as a town in 1895 when Edwin and Charles Millar built a number of timber mills on the banks of the Denmark River to process the giant Karri trees which were felled inland and exported overseas. Visit the artists in their studios, where they create outstanding paintings, sculptures, pottery, glass and fine wood pieces. Fine wineries also abound, including the well known Howard Park, some of which offer fine food as well as fine wine, and there is a choice of restaurants, cafes and coffee houses to suit all tastes. The town is 9 km from the coast at Ocean Beach. From here to the west is a coastline with a string of beaches and rocky bays. Lights Beach, Madfish Bay, Elephant Rocks and Greens pool are just a few of the locations which visitors love to frequent.
There are challenging or gentle coastal and forest walks, and intimate nooks and
picnic spots. Activities including world-class wineries and vineyards, art galleries,
animal touch farms, horse riding, great fishing and surfing, craft shops, antique shops,
restaurants and cafes.
